Summer is coming and coming fast. However with parents losing jobs and summer job markets tightening, many students are finding it more difficult to see the light at the end of the finals tunnel this year. Still, let’s remember what summer really means. Summer is a time for stargazing from your rooftop, ice cream on crazy hot days, and driving with the sunroof open. Even if you can’t afford that week in Cancun or a month long road trip with your buddies, summer is a time for fun in the sun.
The simple joys of the summer season do not have to break the bank.
Michigan is home to beautiful state and metro parks so get out there and utilize them. A good bike ride on the trail or hike through the recreational park is good for the body and the soul. Outdoor exploring can also be a fun activity amongst friends. Some of the inside jokes have been invented while hiking with friends. Instead of chatting on AIM, get together and get active.
Do not underestimate the magic of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream or 7/11 Slurpees. My friends and I keep plastic spoons in our cars for impromptu ice cream runs. Share a pint while you sit on the end of the dock and talk about your childhoods, your dreams, or just watch the sunset. Sweet treats make you smile and are great at facilitating bonding time. Plus, if you took my earlier advice and went on the hike, you can afford the calories.
Try something new. Just because classes are on hold, your brain doesn’t have to be. You’ll have fun pushing yourself and expanding your experiences. If you’ve never played disc golf, this summer could be your chance. Instead of making more Mac&Cheese, pull up the Food Network’s website, and try an exotic recipe. Even if it’s horrible, you could end up with a funny story to tell around the campfire.
Bonfires are not just for camping. Backyard bonfires are a fantastic way to spice up an average summer night. Invite some friends over that you have not seen in a while and relax. Even if you all work different jobs or went to different schools, a random Tuesday night can turn into a great time for catch-up. Do not waste the opportunity for gossip and s’mores.
You’re in the Great Lakes state. The natural water in Michigan offers an infinite number of opportunities for a fun time. Rent a kayak and pretend you’re an Olympic white water kayaker. (Oh yes, that’s an Olympic sport.) If you have a boat, a friend with a boat, or an acquaintance you call a friend because he has a boat, get on it. Be it fishing, tubing, sailing, or waterskiing, boats are perfect for summer fun. You’ll laugh with each other, and in the case of tubing or waterskiing, at each other. Either way, memories made on water will get you through another cold school year.
The Spartan Review will be on campus for you in the fall. Until then, recharge your minds, inspire your souls, and make some memories. Happy Summer Everyone.
